Multiparametric prostate MRI (mpMRI)

Multiparametric prostate MRI (mpMRI) is a modern, non-invasive, and painless imaging method used for the early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer (prostate carcinoma). By combining several specialized MRI techniques, mpMRI provides a highly accurate assessment of suspicious areas and helps avoid unnecessary biopsies or perform them in a more targeted manner. The examination is performed and interpreted in our clinics by radiologists with specialized expertise in prostate diagnostics.

Indications

When is a prostate MRI advisable?

A prostate MRI is always recommended when it is necessary to determine, as accurately as possible yet in a gentle and non-invasive manner, whether there are any changes that require treatment.

Abnormal PSA level
  • The PSA level (prostate-specific antigen) requires further investigation if it is above the normal range for the patient’s age or if it rises significantly over time. Prostate MRI scans help to determine whether a significant tumour is actually present.
Unclear physical examination findings
  • If any abnormalities are found during the urological examination (e.g. on palpation), an MRI scan provides additional, more detailed information.
Before a biopsy
  • Nowadays, MRI is often used prior to a tissue sample being taken to pinpoint suspicious areas – this increases the success rate and can help avoid unnecessary biopsies.
  • If a previous biopsy was normal but concerns remain (e.g. persistently elevated PSA levels), an MRI scan can reveal hidden changes.
Active monitoring
  • To assess the size, location and extent of the tumour more accurately. This is important for planning treatment.
  • For known, low-grade tumours, MRI is used for regular monitoring.
