Everything you need to know about breast screening

All three methods examine the breast – but they differ in terms of technique, precision and scope of application:

  • Mammography – a 2D X-ray image of the breast. The only early-detection method proven to reduce breast cancer mortality; particularly effective for detecting microcalcifications. Low radiation exposure.
  • Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) – An advanced form of mammography providing layer-by-layer 3D imaging. Compared with conventional mammography, it detects 30–35 per cent more invasive tumours.
  • Breast MRI – Magnetic resonance imaging without X-rays, using a contrast agent. Sensitivity of over 90 per cent for invasive carcinomas. Reserved for high-risk patients or for the investigation of complex findings.
