Low-dose CT scans use a significantly lower dose of radiation than standard CT scans. The effective dose is around 1–2 millisieverts (mSv) – roughly equivalent to the natural background radiation to which a person in Germany is exposed over a period of 4–8 months. The risk-benefit ratio is clearly favourable for the defined risk group.

Neuroradiology is a highly specialized branch of radiology that focuses exclusively on the diagnostic imaging of the nervous system. This includes the brain, the spinal cord, the spine, and the associated blood vessels. Using modern techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and CT and MR angiography, it enables the precise visualization of complex anatomical structures and pathological changes.

Unlike general radiologists, physicians trained in neuroradiology work daily with the delicate and complex structures of the central nervous system. Their scope of practice ranges from the early detection of acute conditions such as stroke, through the diagnosis of tumors, to the assessment of vascular anomalies such as aneurysms. In addition to diagnostics, interventional neuroradiology also plays an important role, for example in minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of vascular diseases.

Neuroradiology is of great clinical importance and a central component of modern patient care. It works closely with specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, as well as otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and ophthalmology to ensure comprehensive diagnostics and treatment planning. Especially in acute emergencies, rapid and precise neuroradiological evaluation is crucial and can be life-saving.

The goal of neuroradiology is to detect diseases early, confirm diagnoses reliably, and create an optimal foundation for individualized therapeutic decisions. Modern imaging techniques enable gentle, outpatient diagnostics at the highest level—often without long wait times.

MRI vs. CT angiography – what is the difference?

Both procedures are used to visualize blood vessels, but they differ in technique, duration, and applications. The radiologist determines which procedure is appropriate based on the clinical presentation.

MR angiography (MRA) is particularly suitable for long-term monitoring, as it involves no radiation exposure. CT angiography is the faster option in an emergency and provides particularly clear images of bone structures and bleeding.

Frequently asked question: “Is an angiography a surgical procedure?” — No. MRA and CTA are non-invasive imaging techniques. Only catheter angiography (DSA) is a minor interventional procedure.
