MRM – What is it?
Magnetic resonance mammography (MRM) with contrast agent is a highly sensitive, X-ray–free method of imaging the female breast using MRI. By far, it is the most sensitive technique for early detection and demonstration of pathological changes such as malignant breast tumors.
Breast (Mamma) Sonography
Breast sonography is an ultrasound examination of the breast, usually employed for further clarification of a clinically or mammographically suspicious finding.
In particular, in young women with dense glandular tissue, ultrasound is an important complement to mammography, because assessment on mammography can be limited when the breast tissue is dense.
The strengths of ultrasound lie in its high resolution, the freely selectable viewing angle, and the immediate display of regions of interest, which the physician can further refine during the examination. Its disadvantage is that very small calcifications—which may indicate an early (developing) tumor—cannot be seen. These calcifications, however, are well visualized on mammography.
Both procedures (mammography and sonography) complement each other to provide a comprehensive and meaningful diagnostic assessment.
Ultrasound-Guided Core Needle Biopsy
To clarify an indeterminate finding, a tissue sample can be taken from the breast under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. This procedure offers high accuracy and causes only minimal impact for the patient, since no surgery is required.
Stereotactic or Tomosynthesis-Guided Vacuum Biopsy
Stereotactic / stereotactic or tomosynthesis-guided vacuum biopsy makes it possible to localize non-palpable and ultrasound-occult changes (especially suspicious calcifications) with millimeter precision in order to obtain tissue samples. With this micro-invasive method it is possible to differentiate a malignant (cancerous) from a benign finding. The examination is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.
Tomosynthesis
This technique is a kind of sectional (slice) imaging method in mammography that uses X-rays to depict different layers of the breast, thereby reducing the superimposition of structures. It is particularly useful in patients with very dense glandular tissue. When appropriately indicated by the radiologist, it can be performed in addition to standard mammography.
Galactography
radprax offers galactography at the radiology practice in Solingen. In this examination method the milk ducts of the breast are visualized. It is useful in cases of bloody nipple discharge.
