What is oncological imaging?

Tumour diagnosis – from detection to follow-up care

Oncological imaging encompasses all radiological procedures used in cancer diagnosis, tumour characterisation, staging and monitoring of disease progression (restaging/follow-up).

The choice of the right technique – MRI, CT or a combination of both – depends on the affected organ, the clinical question and the type of tumour. Our radiologists will advise you on which technique offers the greatest diagnostic benefit in your situation.

Important: Not every finding is cancer – and not every cancer looks the same on an image. Interpretation by an experienced specialist is crucial.

An overview of the procedures

  • Magnetic resonance imaging:
    Best soft-tissue resolution – ideal for the brain, liver, pelvis, prostate, breast, bone marrow and spine. No X-rays, no radiation risk.
  • Computed tomography:
    Rapid staging of lymph nodes, lungs and abdomen. The gold standard for assessment of the thorax and bone metastases (cortical bone).
  • PET/CT:
    Combination of metabolic activity (PET) and anatomy (CT). Particularly valuable for lymphomas, melanomas and unclear findings.
  • Whole-body MRI:
    A comprehensive overview of the body – particularly useful for detecting metastases, multiple myeloma and lymphomas.
