The programme follows strict quality guidelines laid down by the European Union. These include the regulation that only specially qualified facilities may carry out the screening and that each mammogram is assessed by two specially qualified doctors in accordance with the dual control principle.

International studies have shown that regular mammography screening for women in the 50 to 75 age group can significantly reduce breast cancer mortality, as this examination can detect even non-palpable tumours at an early stage. Mammography screening is financed by the health insurance companies and implemented in co-operation with the associations of statutory health insurance physicians. Participation is voluntary and free of charge.

How do I take part in the screening?

  • If you are between 50 and 75 years old but have not yet received an invitation to the screening, you can also register directly via the "Zentrale Stelle" in your district.

  • The telephone number for making appointments for mammography screening is:

  • Please bring the invitation letter with the code with you to the appointment. Without this letter, participation is usually not possible.

  • You should fill out the medical history form at home and bring it with you to the examination appointment.

  • Please note that it should be at least 12 months since your last mammogram. If you have spontaneously felt something abnormal or have acute symptoms, you should contact your gynaecologist for clarification and discuss with them which examination makes sense in your particular case.
